THE EDUCATION EDIT

AQA A-Level Psychology Paper 1 Predictions 2026

Last-Minute Revision Guide, High-Probability Topics & Exam Strategy

The final countdown is on. With the AQA A-Level Psychology Paper 1 exam on Friday 15th May, you are entering the most important stage of your revision.

At this point, the goal is no longer to revise everything. Success comes from focusing on high-probability topics, exam technique, and maximising marks under pressure. This guide breaks down exactly what to focus on in the final days.

How to Revise AQA Psychology in the Final Days

One of the biggest mistakes students make at this stage is trying to re-learn the entire specification. Instead, high-performing students shift their strategy:

  • Focus on Depth, Not Breadth: You do NOT need multiple studies for every topic. Learn one strong study per topic in detail (procedure, findings, evaluation) and be confident applying it to different scenarios.

  • Active Recall Over Passive Reading: If you can’t retrieve it under pressure, it won't score marks. Focus on planning essays from memory and answering timed questions.

  • Think Like an Examiner: AQA rewards precise terminology, clear application to the "stem" (the scenario), and evaluation linked to Issues & Debates.

AQA Paper 1 Psychology Predictions 2026

Important Disclaimer: These predictions are based on a statistical analysis of AQA Paper 1 trends since 2017, including topic rotation and frequency patterns. They are designed to help you prioritise revision effectively but are not a guarantee. You should continue to revise the full specification alongside these resources.

Social Influence

  • Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment: Focus on deindividuation, social roles, and the early termination of the study. For AO3, prioritise ethical issues and the Banuazizi & Mohavedi critique regarding demand characteristics.

  • Social Change: Ensure you can explain the minority influence processes (Consistency, Commitment, Flexibility) alongside the augmentation principle, the snowball effect, and social cryptomnesia.

Memory

  • Types of Long-Term Memory: Focus on the distinctions between Episodic, Semantic, and Procedural memory. Use the case studies of Clive Wearing and HM as your primary AO3 evidence.

  • Retrieval Failure: Master the distinction between Context-dependent forgetting (external cues) and State-dependent forgetting (internal mood/state).

Attachment

  • The Strange Situation (Ainsworth): You must know the 8 structured episodes and the specific behaviours: proximity seeking, secure base, stranger anxiety, separation anxiety, and reunion behaviour.

  • Schaffer & Emerson’s Stages: Learn the sequence perfectly: Asocial, Indiscriminate, Specific, and Multiple attachments.

Psychopathology

  • Characteristics of Disorders: This is a high-priority area. You must distinguish between Behavioural (actions), Emotional (feelings), and Cognitive (thoughts) characteristics for OCD, Depression, and Phobias.

  • The Behaviourist Approach to Phobias: This is a strong "returning topic." Focus on the Two-Process Model: acquisition through Classical Conditioning (Little Albert) and maintenance through Operant Conditioning (Negative Reinforcement).

  • Definitions of Abnormality: Be confident in Statistical Infrequency, Deviation from Social Norms, FFA, and Jahoda’s Ideal Mental Health. Focus your AO3 on Cultural Relativism.

Research Methods: The "Hidden" Marks

Research Methods is often embedded within the other sections. Be ready to identify IVs/DVs, spot ethical issues, or recognise experimental designs within the context of an Attachment or Social Influence scenario.

How to Score Top-Band AO3 Marks

To reach the highest levels, avoid generic evaluations like "this study lacks validity." Instead:

  1. Link to Issues & Debates: (e.g., Zimbardo and Ethical Implications).

  2. Explain the Impact: How does the critique affect our trust in the findings?

  3. Use PEEL Chains: Point, Evidence, Explain, Link.
